Rust In Peace

Woke up to find my laptop has finally given up on me and stopped working. Not a good start. I lost a good portion of my work and other things as a result. Now I have nothing to show my supervisor. Not that I'm too enthusiastic about my project anyway. I guess it's good that at least the desktop is still running...

Oh well looking on the bright side, that means I might get around to do a few more summaries tonight. Maybe. I have uploaded the scans (this is just the scans) of Trojan Green Asteroid (this includes both the mp3 and scans). Or if you just want to view the images, they are here. I have replaced the link in the previous post as well.

There is indeed a story following Renko and Maribel. The titular Torifune refers to a Japanese space station that had an accident and vanished. Torifune carried many different plants and animals as a experiment to see if they could adapt to the living conditions in space. The station had an ecosystem on board and the ultimate goal was apparently to achieve terraforming? Renko says no matter how many mini ecosystems there are, it's impossible to maintain a space station without humans. Maribel says that she recently saw what's "inside" the space station (in her dream). Even though the station is said to have disappeared, there's a good chance that it's in the Lagrange point in the Earth-Moon system.

What Maribel witnessed inside the station was a beautiful and chaotic green forest, filled with otherworldly plants. After some exploring, Maribel came across a torii which she felt was out of place. Mari says she woke up after this, and Renko thinks Mari's dreams are scary. Mari wonders why there was a torii on the space station. Renko says the Ame-no-Torifune shrine was built on the space station as a place to pray for a safe voyage (not too sure about this line). Renko says (it's funny) that no matter how advanced science and technology is, in the end humans still choose to rely on gods.

That night Maribel took Renko with her to the Torifune satellite, some 30 thousand kilometers above ground...of course it's all in Mari's dream. They came across a chimera. Mari got scared but Renko was obviously intrigued (started giving observations about it while Mari was panicking and yelling "How can you be so calm?! That thing is dangerous!"). They both woke up. Renko says it was a dream so she was more excited about meeting a new creature than being scared. Mari thinks scary things are scary, even if it was just a dream. Renko wants to go to Torifune again, Mari says it's too dangerous but ultimately gives in.

Once again inside the station, Renko is having a blast jumping around due to unstable gravity. Renko says that her body feels so light that she wouldn't worry about it even if the chimera came out again. Mari thinks Renko shouldn't try her luck. Renko says it's okay because right now she feels like the main character of a shooting game. Renko says this place really is the Torifune satellite, "the Torifune ruins" (a term came into use after experts said that the Japanese spent all the money building a space station only for it to become a space ruin). Just as Renko wonders if they would get hurt in the dream, the two girls are attacked by monsters.

You'd think that all the creatures on the station would have died after the station could no longer be controlled by humans, and therefore there would be no point in blowing budget to recover it. Who would have thought that, among the trojan asteroids in the Earth-Moon system, there would be an isolated paradise?

Renko waits for Maribel outside the hospital. It turns out that when they woke up, Mari's arm was hurt. Mari says that it's unfair that Renko was unscathed.

That's the basic gist of the story.

If I remember correctly, Maribel often visits Gensokyo in her dreams? So could it be that the station didn't simply have an accident (commonly believed to be caused by computer bugs) and disappear, but actually drifted into Gensokyo? The last track is even called "The Gensokyo Floating in Space (Paradise Torifune)". Also Mari can take Renko with her in her dreams now? Is she going to take Renko along to Gensokyo then? Oh well I guess at least the girls finally found a way to travel into outer space.

Now to the far side of the moon!

  1. Sounds a whole lot like the setting of Dead Space. I wonder if ZUN was aware of the similarities.. oh well..
